Three New Modes in Development — Competitive, Quick-Play and Social Co-op

Mega Crit's Casey Yano confirmed three new Slay the Spire 2 modes in development: a competitive ranked-style mode, a quick-play format for shorter sessions, and an expanded social co-op direction.

Early Access's roadmap got its first real substance in April: Mega Crit co-founder Casey Yano confirmed that three brand-new modes are in active development — each aimed at a different slice of the player base that the launch's record numbers revealed.
The three tracks, as described:
- Competitive mode — leaderboards and/or player-versus-player elements, giving the spire's theorycrafters a scoreboard to fight over rather than just Discord consensus.
- Quick-play mode — a tightened, shorter-session format that preserves the core deckbuilding depth while respecting players who can't commit to a full climb.
- Social co-op — an expansion of multiplayer beyond the current four-player climb, exploring new synchronous and asynchronous ways to play together.
The reveal's context was the numbers: a launch that set Steam concurrency records and needed three million sales in week one just to contain its own lobby queues. A bigger player base fragments into more play patterns — ladder climbers, lunch-break roguelikers, friend groups — and the three-mode plan is the studio's answer to that fragmentation rather than a pivot away from the core.
Yano coupled the news with a reiteration of the Early Access values: the base game's integrity stays put — no microtransactions, content delivered through updates — while the mode experiments expand what "one more run" can mean.
No dates were attached. The safe read: modes ship as they mature, in the same patch cadence that's already delivered balance rollbacks and content drops.
