Slay the Spire 2 Overclock Status Engine — Burn Recycling with Rocket Punch

Overclock draws three and dumps a Burn into your discard pile — and Status creation is fuel for Rocket Punch discounts, Tesla Coil value and status-payoff cards. The Defect engine build for Ascension climbing.

Most decks treat Status cards as pollution. The Overclock status engine treats them as a resource: Overclock draws 2 (3) and creates a Burn as its cost, and the rest of the deck either recycles that Burn or gets paid for it. The result is a machine that draws half its deck per turn while its biggest attacks keep getting cheaper — one of the smoothest Ascension 10 climbs the Defect has.

The Burn was supposed to be a downside. It became a production quota.

The engine pieces

  • Overclock (Uncommon, 0) — draw 2 (3), add 1 Burn to your discard pile. The best pure draw in the class; the Burn is a resource this build is happy to receive.
  • Rocket Punch (Uncommon, 2) — 13 (14) damage, draw 1 (2), and whenever you create a Status, this card's cost drops by 1 until played. Overclock's Burn is a Rocket Punch discount — cast both every turn and the Punch trends toward free.
  • Scrape (Uncommon, 1) — 7 (10) damage, draw 4 (5), discard non-0-cost draws. Filters the engine cards to the top.
  • Charge Battery (Common, 1) — 7 (10) Block plus next-turn energy. Smoothes the turns where the engine eats your whole action.

Status payoffs worth taking

Every card that cares about Status creation stacks with Overclock's byproduct:

  • Rocket Punch itself — each Burn is a discount.
  • White Noise and random-Power generators add more free plays.
  • Any reward-screen card that triggers on Status creation or on playing 0-cost cards is now premium — the build converts junk-drawer synergies into consistency.

The loop discipline

The engine's one failure mode is Burn flooding: too many copies of Overclock without payoffs means the discard pile silts up. The management rules:

  1. Two Overclocks is the sweet spot — three only if a second Rocket Punch or a Status payoff arrived.
  2. Upgrade Overclock early — better draw per Burn keeps the ratio honest.
  3. Reboot (Rare, 0) is the pressure valve: shuffle everything back and draw 4 (6), resetting a silted discard pile instantly.
  4. Don't hoover up random Status cards from events — only Burns you manufacture on purpose are part of the plan.

Climbing with it

Act 1: take Overclock, Rocket Punch, Scrape, and one real block card; play a vanilla game until the payoffs arrive. Act 2: the discount loop comes online — Rocket Punch casts for 2, then 1, then 0 within a turn, while Overclock keeps the hand at full. Act 3: the deck's ceiling is a Rocket Punch cast every few cards, forever, with Charge Battery walls covering the gaps. It asks for one decision per turn and pays out like it took ten.
