Slay the Spire 2 Stutter and Performance Fixes — Smooth Out the Frame Pacing

Fix Slay the Spire 2 stutter: exclusive fullscreen, VSync off with a framerate cap, lower shadows and particles, close background apps, clear shader caches, and cap your orb slots.
A card game stuttering feels absurd until it happens mid-combo. The Defect's late-game frames are the usual victim — dozens of orbs, full particle bloom, and a GPU that suddenly remembers it has other customers. Here is the fix ladder, in-game settings first.

In-game settings (the fixes that actually bite)
- Display mode: exclusive fullscreen. Borderless window looks nice and stutters subtly — Windows' window manager force-syncs it.
- VSync off; cap the framerate instead. Use the driver's fast-sync/enhanced-sync if tearing bothers you, and set the cap to your monitor's refresh (60/144). Uncapped framerates cause hot GPUs and uneven frame pacing — the literal definition of stutter.
- Trim the expensive toggles: resolution first, then shadows, anti-aliasing and particle effects; kill motion blur and depth of field outright. Low-spec machines should spend their budget on resolution alone.
- Close the Steam overlay: right-click the game → Properties → untick the Steam interface.
System side
- Kill background processes (Ctrl+Shift+Esc): browsers, launchers, download tools, RGB software — anything eating CPU while you play.
- Update GPU drivers — clean install, then reboot.
- Power plan: Windows set to High Performance; laptops on AC power, always.
- Clear caches: Steam → Settings → Downloads → turn off shader pre-caching and clear the download cache; delete the game's local ShaderCache folder and let it rebuild.
The orb-slot secret
One in-game cause is easy to miss: orb slots themselves cost performance. Every slot's passive re-evaluates each turn, and evokes pile particle work. Lightning/Frost racks of 5–6 slots and Dark/Plasma racks of 3–4 run identically in gameplay terms to oversized racks — but visibly smoother. Deck-draft-wise, extra Capacitors are worth less than players assume; see the Focus and Lightning build for what to draft instead.
Still hitching?
Verify game files (a corrupted shader cache stutters forever), and on multi-monitor setups run the game alone on the primary display. If the hitching started immediately after a driver update, roll the driver back — new drivers occasionally ship with the exact regression you're feeling.
