Slay the Spire 2 Defect — Class Guide, Orbs & Starter Relic

The Defect in Slay the Spire 2: 75 Max HP, Cracked Core Lightning channeling, orb slots and evocation. The last class to unlock and the most engine-driven build space.

The Defect is Slay the Spire 2's final unlock: an automaton eternally modifying itself to survive, which deploys orb technology when it must fight. It is the most machine-brained class in the roster — a character that wins by installing an engine, charging it passively, and firing it on schedule while the fight happens around it.

Defect stats and starter relic

  • Max HP: 75
  • Starting gold: 99
  • Starter relic: Cracked Core — at the start of each combat, Channel 1 Lightning
  • How to unlock: complete a run with the Necrobinder

Cracked Core is a free orb every single fight: no card spent, no slot contested. It also introduces the class's core loop from turn one — Channel an orb, let it sit in a slot, and cash it in either passively or all at once.

The orb engine

Everything the Defect does routes through orb slots:

  1. Channel fills empty slots with orbs — Lightning for damage, Frost for defense, plus more exotic charges deeper into a run.
  2. Passive triggers fire every orb's effect at the end of your turn, so filled slots work like incremental income.
  3. Evocation releases orbs early for immediate payoff — the difference between a slow drip and a lump-sum payout.

Deckbuilding around the Defect is really deckbuilding around that economy: cards that Channel faster, slots that hold more, and payoffs that convert stored charge into bursts of damage or block.

What a good Defect run looks like

Act 1 is about slot economy — get orbs Channeling cheaply and often. Act 2 is about picking a specialty: a Lightning build that outscales enemy health bars, a Frost build that turns passive charge into permanent armor, or hybrid builds that pivot between offense and defense each turn. By Act 3 the best Defect decks barely look like card games anymore; they look like automation.

Our build guides cover two community favorites: the rocket-fist infinite and the overclock-compression engine.

Ascension notes

An Act 3 boss kill unlocks the Defect's Ascension ladder. Its passive income curve holds up well as modifiers stack — enemies hit harder, but an automated engine does not miss turns.
