Slay the Spire 2 Stuck on the Steam Launch Screen — Three-Step Fix

Stuck on the Slay the Spire 2 launch screen? Disable Steam shader pre-caching, force a different rendering driver in launch options, and verify game files. Overlay and Sentry cleanup inside.
The infinite launch screen — Steam says "Running," the game shows a logo, and nothing else ever happens — has three known killers, in order of success rate. Work top to bottom.

Step 1: disable Steam shader pre-caching (highest success)
- Steam → Settings → Downloads.
- Uncheck Enable Shader Pre-Caching.
- Restart Steam, then launch the game.
Pre-caching compiles shaders at startup; when its cache conflicts with a driver update, the launch sequence stalls exactly where you're stuck.
Step 2: switch the rendering driver
Steam → right-click the game → Properties → General → Launch Options, and add one of (test one at a time, keep the winner):
--rendering-driver opengl3(try this first)--rendering-driver vulkan
Vulkan/OpenGL conflicts after GPU driver updates are the second-most-common cause of a frozen launch. If the game opens windowed-small or flickering, append -windowed.
Step 3: verify game files
Right-click the game → Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files. Let the scan finish completely before launching again.
Also worth doing
- Close the Steam in-game overlay: Properties → General → uncheck the overlay.
- Exit background interferers: Discord overlay, GeForce Experience, recorders, antivirus scans — anything that injects into processes.
- Run as administrator: right-click the game exe → Compatibility → administrator.
- Delete the Sentry file: in the install folder, remove
libsentry.windows.release.x86_64, then restart Steam. - Update your GPU drivers if none of the above moved the needle.
After it launches
If the game now starts but stutters or crashes mid-fight, head to the stutter and performance guide — the causes and fixes are different once the engine is actually running.
