IGN scored Slay the Spire 2 9/10: not a reinvention of the deckbuilding-roguelike formula, but a brilliant expansion — preserving the core while adding rule-changing evolutions across every class.

The review score the sequel's reputation was always going to be measured against arrived on March 14: IGN gave Slay the Spire 2 a 9/10 — the verdict being that this is not a reinvention of the deckbuilding-roguelike formula its predecessor created, but "a brilliant expansion" of it that makes the whole structure feel new again.

The review's architecture was notable for what it declined to criticize. The load-bearing walls of the original — turn-based combat, the risk calculus of map routes, the deck-as-character arc — were preserved deliberately, and IGN's judgment was that preserving them was correct. The brilliance, in the review's framing, lived in the details: rule-changing evolutions layered into every system, enough of them to force veteran players to rethink habits, and enough new strategic space that the three returning classes play genuinely differently than they used to.

That last point was the review's sharpest observation. Sequels to system-driven classics usually fail one of two ways: changing too much and losing the identity, or too little and feeling like DLC. Slay the Spire 2's route — new resources like the Regent's Stars, new pressure systems like the Necrobinder's summon-and-sacrifice kit, co-op, the Ancients — threaded it: familiar at a glance, different in the hands.

Paired with the launch numbers and the three-million first week, the 9/10 capped the cleanest launch arc of 2026: critics, charts and players all telling the same story.
