Slay the Spire 2 Focus Lightning Build — Frost Defense, Thunder Burst

Published 2026-03-09Updated 2026-09-196 min read

The Defect's orb flagship build for Slay the Spire 2: Frost orbs block, Focus scales everything, Storm and Tempest fill slots, and Tesla Coil plus Thunder turn slots into burst damage.

This is the Defect build the class was designed around: Frost orbs for armor, Lightning orbs for burst, and Focus — the stat that multiplies every orb's numbers — as the scaling axis. Frost keeps you alive early, Focus compounds the engine, and by the late game a full rack of slots detonates through Tesla Coil and Thunder before the enemy's second turn.

The Defect deploying orb technology in Slay the Spire 2
Frost for the wall, Lightning for the bill. Focus pays both.

The Focus engine

  • Focused Strike (Uncommon, 1) — 9 (11) damage, gain 1 (2) Focus this turn. Attack and temp-Focus in one line.
  • Hotfix (1) — gain 2 Focus this turn, Exhaust. The instant-dial burst enabler.
  • Defragment (Rare Power, 1) — gain 1 (2) Focus permanently for the combat. The scaling anchor.
  • Biased Cognition (Ancient Power, 1) — gain 5 (6) Focus at the cost of 1 per turn afterward. The biggest single Focus swing in the game; four or five turns of god-mode orbs wins most fights before the decay matters.
  • Synchronize — Focus this turn for each unique orb type you have. The hybrid-rack payoff.

Orb mechanics, precisely

Per the game's own keyword rules: a Frost orb's passive grants 2 (+ Focus) Block, and evoking it grants 5 (+ Focus) Block. Lightning passives fire damage at a random enemy when triggered. Every point of Focus raises all of these numbers at once — which is why Focus is the build's whole economy.

Filling the rack

  • Ball Lightning (Common, 1) — 7 (10) damage and Channel 1 Lightning. The best common in the class.
  • Storm (Uncommon Power, 1) — whenever you play a Power, Channel 1 (2) Lightning. Powers become passive generation.
  • Tempest (Uncommon, X) — Channel X (X+1) Lightning. A full rack in one cast on an energy-rich turn.
  • Capacitor (Uncommon Power, 1) — gain 2 (3) orb slots. More slots is more simultaneous passive income.
  • Rainbow (Rare, 2) — Channel Lightning, Frost and Dark. The flex slot filler.

The cash-out

  • Tesla Coil (Uncommon, 0) — deal 3 (4) damage and trigger ALL your Lightning orbs against the enemy (twice when upgraded). The burst button: a rack of six Lightning orbs becomes a targeted salvo.
  • Thunder (Uncommon Power, 1) — whenever you Evoke Lightning, deal 8 (11) damage to each enemy hit. Turns slot turnover into AOE.
  • Loop / Hyperbeam — passive-doubling and Focus-spenders for the late fights.

Building and piloting

Act 1: Ball Lightning, Charge Battery (7 (10) Block plus next-turn energy), and any Frost channel you see — survive while shopping for Focus. Act 2: Defragment or Biased Cognition comes online; every channel now gains value permanently. Act 3: slots full (5–6), Focus 5+, and every turn ends in Tesla Coil salvos with Thunder echoing them across packs. Keep 25–30 cards at most; orbs hate dead draws as much as any engine (see deck thinning).
