Slay the Spire 2 Tesla Coil+ Change — Less Damage, Double the Triggers

The 0.105 Tesla Coil+ rebalance: damage down from 6 to 4, but Lightning orb triggers doubled from one to two. Why the trade is a massive buff to multi-orb Defect builds.

The 0.105 patch rebalanced Tesla Coil+, the Defect's free Lightning-trigger, in the least obvious way possible: it made the card worse on paper and dramatically better in practice. Damage dropped from 6 to 4 — but the Lightning trigger count doubled from once to twice.

Two triggers beat one bonus point. It's not close.

The exact change

  • Tesla Coil (unupgraded): 0 cost — deal 3 (4) damage, trigger all your Lightning orbs once.
  • Tesla Coil+ (0.105): 0 cost — deal 4 damage, trigger all your Lightning orbs twice.

The card is still 0-cost with no Exhaust. It still fires every Lightning orb you have. The only thing that changed is the ratio between its pocket change and its real effect.

The math on why doubling wins

Each Lightning trigger deals each orb's passive damage. With one Lightning orb, the old card's extra damage roughly cancelled the new card's loss. With two or more orbs, the second trigger outearns the 2-point cut immediately — and the gap widens linearly with every orb in the rack:

  • 3 Lightning orbs: the new card triggers six passive hits per cast instead of three.
  • 5–6 orbs (late-game racks): the second trigger is worth double-digit damage per cast, repeated every turn, for free.

Add Focus scaling — each orb's passive grows with Focus, so every trigger inherits the multiplier — and the doubled trigger count scales exponentially while the lost 2 damage stays exactly 2.

How to build around it

  • Fill slots, don't over-invest in one orb: the value is per-trigger, so quantity beats quality. Capacitor (2 (3) extra slots) and cheap Lightning channels are the partners.
  • Focus still stacks on top: Defragment and Biased Cognition raise every trigger's damage.
  • Cast it every single turn: it's free. The only wrong way to use Tesla Coil+ is forgetting to.

The rebalance is a quiet thesis statement about the class: the Defect's power was never one orb — it was the rack. The patch just made the rack louder.
