Slay the Spire 2 Won't Launch — Crashes, Black Screen and Quick Fixes

Slay the Spire 2 won't start? Force OpenGL or Vulkan rendering, verify game files, run as administrator, disable Steam overlay, update GPU drivers and clear shader caches.

Nine out of ten "the game won't start" reports end at the same three fixes: a rendering launch option, a file verification, and a clean driver install. Work down this list in order — most launches recover in the first two steps.

Fix 1: force a rendering driver (fixes black screens and instant crashes)

The game's renderer is the usual culprit. In Steam: right-click the game → Properties → General → Launch Options, then add exactly one of:

--rendering-driver opengl3

If that changes nothing, try:

--rendering-driver vulkan

Launch after each change and keep whichever one opens the game. (You can append -windowed to force a window as well.)

Fix 2: verify game files

Right-click the game → Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files. Steam re-downloads anything corrupted or missing, which covers most post-update crashes.

Fix 3: run as administrator and kill the overlay

  • Right-click the game's exe → Properties → Compatibility → Run this program as an administrator.
  • Steam → Properties → General → disable Enable the Steam Interface (the in-game overlay), a known interferer.

Fix 4: system-side cleanup

  • Update GPU drivers — clean-install the latest NVIDIA/AMD package and reboot.
  • Close conflicts: screen recorders, streaming tools, frame-rate monitors, trainers, and (temporarily) antivirus/firewall overlays.
  • Clear shader caches: delete the shader cache files in the game's core folder, then re-verify files.
  • Delete stray Sentry files: in the install folder, remove libsentry.windows.release.x86_64.bak and release_info, then restart Steam.

Fix 5: the single-player language quirk

If the game launches but single-player mode hangs: temporarily set Windows region to English (US/UK) and the display language to English, then relaunch. It is a known localization-sensitive path.

Still nothing?

Multiplayer and login failures are network-shaped, not launch-shaped: use wired internet, allow the game and Steam through Windows Firewall, and check our multiplayer disconnect guide. As a last resort, uninstall, delete the leftover install folder, and reinstall fresh.
