Slay the Spire 2 Introduces the Ancients — Blessings Replace Boss Relics

The November 2025 Neow newsletter revealed the Ancients: mysterious god-like beings who greet you at each act's start with boon choices — a structural replacement for Slay the Spire 1's boss relics.

The November 2025 Neow newsletter pulled back the curtain on one of the sequel's biggest structural changes: the Ancients — mysterious, god-like beings who greet the player at the start of every act with a choice of boons.
The framing was deliberate. In the original Slay the Spire, Neow's opening blessing was the only moment of divine intervention; boss relics carried the act-transition power spike instead. Slay the Spire 2 spread that identity across eight Ancients — described as kin of Neow, the "mother of revival" herself — each stationed at an act boundary, each offering a three-option boon choice.
The newsletter confirmed the structural implications immediately:
- Boss relics, restructured. Compared to the original game, players would no longer be able to skip the choice — an act-start blessing must be taken, which turns every Ancient meeting into a real deck-planning decision rather than a polite wave-through.
- Unlockable roster. Ancients generally need to be unlocked before they can appear, tied to the account progression timeline.
- Neow stays first. Neow herself always opens Act 1 — the exception being a brand-new save's very first run.
Later coverage filled in the names: Neow at Act 1, and — most famously — Orobas, the Act 2 rainbow-Ancient whose drawback-free relic pools (Glass Eye, Driftwood, the starter-relic-upgrading Touch of Orobas) became run-defining picks. See our Orobas guide for the full pool breakdown.
