Slay the Spire 2 Will Never Have Microtransactions — 'We Hate Them'

Mega Crit co-founder Casey Yano says Slay the Spire 2 will have no microtransactions — despite fans offering to buy cosmetics — because the team wants every player to share one game.

In a live-service era, Slay the Spire 2 planted its flag: no microtransactions — ever, basically. Mega Crit co-founder and lead developer Casey Yano told media the sequel would follow the original's model, and the reasoning went deeper than policy.

The team, Yano said, are "microtransaction haters" — and the sentiment held even against the most consumer-friendly version of the idea. Plenty of players had volunteered to pay for cosmetic skins; the offer didn't move the needle. The concern was structural: any in-game store, however cosmetic, splits the player experience into haves and have-nots, and the spire works precisely because every climber's deck obeys the same rules, earns the same unlocks, and wears the same cards.

For a roguelike, the pledge is also a design statement. Slay the Spire's economy is hermetically sealed — gold, potions, relics — and its balance patches are legible precisely because nothing outside the game can bend it. A mtx layer would complicate the clean loop the series is famous for.

Coming during a launch week when the game was topping charts and setting concurrency records, the promise read as a values statement from a studio that could afford it: the $30 game is the whole game, and the spire doesn't do upsells.
