Slay the Spire 2 Flanking Status — Facing Rules and the 50% Back Damage

The flanking state introduces Slay the Spire 2's facing rule: "Receive 50% more damage if attacked from behind. Use targeting cards or potions to change your orientation." Position — which way your character is looking — becomes part of combat math.

How facing works

• You have a facing; enemies don't. Your character looks toward one side of the battle; only the player side obeys orientation rules.
• The penalty: any attack that originates from behind you deals 50% more damage.
• Turning: playing a card or potion that targets an enemy rotates you to face that target. Aiming is repositioning.

What it means in practice

1. Target choice is defense. When an enemy on your blind side winds up a big attack, pointing your next targeted card at them turns your front to them — and their incoming hit drops back to normal.
2. Cheap targeting effects gain hidden value. Even a low-damage targeted card or a thrown potion is worth playing before a big blind-side swing, purely to turn around.
3. Untargeted effects don't turn you. Board-wide attacks and passive triggers fire without changing facing — plan your turns so the rotation comes from a card you wanted anyway.
4. It never stacks. The state is binary while it lasts: one facing, one back, no damage-count layers to track.

Decks that care

Positioning matters most for front-loaded defensive decks — Ironclad's block plans and Necrobinder's Osty wall — where a single 50% spike can undo a carefully banked turn. Fast aggro decks that kill the backline threat before it swings simply avoid the question. If the state is on the board, end every turn asking one question: what is behind me, and what is it about to do?
