Defect Builds — Slay the Spire 2 Guide
Slay the Spire 2 Defect builds for every playstyle: frost tank, Big Zap lightning, Dark boss-killers, Claw zero-spam, plus Echo Form and toolbox scaling routes.
The Defect returns in Slay the Spire 2 as the Spire's master of elemental Orbs, rebuilt with "a bulkier, more advanced chassis", a new Glass Orb type, and the Channel/Evoke engine you know. It also has what the community guide calls the best starting deck of any character — Dualcast plus guaranteed damage from your starting Lightning Orb. This page covers the archetypes the material supports: the frost tank, Big Zap lightning, Dark boss-killing, Claw zero-spam, and the secondary power-spam / energy toolbox / status routes.
How the Defect Works
You start with 3 Orb slots (expandable to 10–12). Every Orb has a passive effect each turn and an Evoke effect; newly Channeled Orbs spawn in the leftmost slot and push the others over, and an Orb pushed off the front gets Evoked. The Orb types, per the video guide:
- Lightning — 3 damage per turn passively; Evoke deals 8 damage to a random enemy.
- Frost — Block, whether it's sitting in a slot or Evoked.
- Dark — grows by 6 damage every turn passively, only does something when Evoked, and hits the lowest-HP enemy (a real drawback against a boss with a minion).
- Plasma — 1 extra Energy per turn per Plasma Orb; Evoking one gives 2 Energy.- Glass (new in StS2) — 4 damage to all enemies per turn, decaying by 1 at the start of your turn; Evoking deals twice its current passive to all enemies. A faster-cycling, AoE-flavored alternative to Lightning.
Focus increases every number on your Orbs by 1 — permanent Focus is rare, but per-turn Focus (Synchronize and friends) can reach around 8 per turn. Orb slots × Focus is the character's multiplicative scaling engine. Your starting relic, Cracked Core, Channels 1 Lightning Orb at combat start: 3 guaranteed damage per turn no matter what your deck does, and Dualcast turns it into a 1-mana 16-damage burst that one-shots most of the earliest fights.
Mobalytics lists diverse playstyles, strong Powers, unique Orb mechanics and post-combat healing as strengths; less burst damage, cards that juggle immediate benefit against long-term sustainability, and some RNG as weaknesses. Two running themes from the video guide: remove Strikes (your passives do the damage — Strikes are the deck's worst card), and base damage is so high the Defect can afford early Block cards earlier than anyone. The run shape: Act 1 is easy, Act 2 is the hardest (pick up real scaling tools), and Act 3 is the easiest — 10 Frost Orbs blocking every turn simply cannot be killed through.
Build 1: Frost Tank (Orb Slots + Focus)
Play pattern: Channel a wall of Frost Orbs, add Orb slots and Focus, and become unkillable while your Orbs grind the enemy down. Frost is called the strongest Orb type — Block is the most important resource, and Frost generation that blocks forever without spending Energy is "crazy".
Core cards:
| Card | Cost | Effect | Why it earns a slot |
|---|---|---|---|
| Glacier | — | Solid defensive Frost option | Core Frost generation; S-tier per the video guide |
| Coolheaded | — | Channels Frost, draws a card (upgrade draws 2) | Defense plus draw — "great overall card for any Defect deck" |
| Cold Snap | — | An attack that also Channels Frost | Perfect early card: you're dealing damage and building passive Block at once |
| Chill | — | Frost generation, 0 Energy | Free passive Block every turn; S-tier alongside Glacier |
| Coolant | — | 2 Block per unique Orb type you have (upgrade: 3) | With three Orb types that's 6–9 free Block per turn |
| Loop | — | Start of turn: triggers the passive of your rightmost Orb | Doubles (or triples) the Frost Orb you keep at the front |
| Capacitor | — | More Orb slots | More slots = more end-of-turn Frost; pairs great with Focus |
| Defragment | — | Repeatable Orb scaling | "Take as many of these as you can and/or upgrade them" |
| Genetic Algorithm | — | Block that grows each use: 1 → 4 → 7 → 10 → 13 | Eventually Blocks for ~25 on one Energy; take it on sight in Act 1 |
| Hailstorm | — | 6 damage to all enemies (Frost package) | Your damage solve while the Frost wall holds |
| Charge Battery | — | 9 Block for 1 Energy | Fine early take — better than Leap — with your free Lightning damage |
Relics: Runic Capacitor (great with lots of Frost), Gold-Plated Cables, Emotion Chip, and Data Disk (Focus is always welcome).
How to pilot it: Loop discipline is the skill test — keep a Frost Orb at the front and don't spam, because every Channel pushes it forward and Evokes it. Add slots, Focus, Hailstorm and Coolant, and "you become unkillable."
Strengths and weaknesses: the safest route through Acts 2–3, immune to draw variance; like all Orb plans it lacks burst, so long fights lean on passives.
Build 2: Big Zap (Lightning Aggro)
Play pattern: the most offensive playstyle — flood Lightning, double it with Powers, and Evoke everything. Storm Channels Lightning whenever you play a Power (upgrade: 2; two Storms means 4 per Power), Thunder's Evoke hits for 12 and effectively doubles your Lightning damage, and Voltaic instantly Evokes excess Orbs as the finisher.
Core cards:
| Card | Cost | Effect | Why it earns a slot |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ball Lightning | — | 7 damage, Channel 1 Lightning | With Focused Strike, the S-tier of early damage cards |
| Focused Strike | 1 | 9 damage, gain 1 Focus this turn | Effectively 10+ damage off your starting Lightning; "probably the best early game damage card" |
| Lightning Rod | — | A little Block plus Lightning generation ("two lightnings out of it") | A Lightning per turn from one card; "very impressed" |
| Thunder | — | Big Evoke damage (12 per the video) | "The best early game card you could ask for" — upgrade it and it nearly solves Act 1 |
| Storm | — | Channel Lightning whenever you play a Power (upgrade: 2) | Stacked Storms turn every Power into a Lightning flood |
| Barrage | 1 | Damage per Orb filled: 15 damage, 21 upgraded; ~40 with Capacitor/Modded | Strongest damage card in a vacuum — but it needs Orb setup first |
| Tesla Coil | — | ~9 damage for 0 Energy with two Lightning Orbs; scales with Focus and slots | Free damage that grows with the build |
| Shatter | 1 | 11 damage to all enemies and Evoke all your Orbs | All upside in Lightning/Glass decks — a lot of damage for one Energy |
| Voltaic | — | Excess Orbs are instantly Evoked | The late-game finisher that cashes in a full rack |
| Hyper Beam | — | Heavy damage that costs you Focus | Great in Act 1; play it right before lethal — losing Focus permanently weakens your Orbs, and ~80% of builds care about them |
Relics: Metronome is the standout — this deck Channels constantly, making it "free AoE 30 damage" — plus Emotion Chip.
How to pilot it: take Orb-fillers (Ball Lightning, Lightning Rod) before payoffs like Barrage; stack Storm and Thunder; treat Hyper Beam as a finisher, not an opener, unless your deck ignores Orbs.
Strengths and weaknesses: the highest tempo in the kit; shares the weaker burst ceiling, and spamming Orbs at the wrong time wastes payoffs.
Build 3: Dark — the Boss Killer
Play pattern: the most reliable way to kill single-target fights. A Dark Orb grows by 6 damage every turn it sits, so bank Block, let one Dark Orb cook to 50–100 damage behind your Frost, then multi-Evoke it — Dualcast on a cooked Dark Orb one-shots bosses.
Core cards:
| Card | Cost | Effect | Why it earns a slot |
|---|---|---|---|
| Darkness | — | Channels Dark Orbs (each grows +6 damage per turn) | "Probably the single best card for killing bosses"; two copies reach ~50 damage quickly |
| Shadow Shield | — | Great Block with Dark synergy | Keeps you alive while the Orb cooks |
| Loop | — | Triggers your rightmost Orb's passive each turn | Stacked with Darkness, it accelerates the cooking; still great with Frost |
| Dualcast | 1 | Evoke your rightmost Orb twice | The starting card becomes the finisher — one mana, two Evoke triggers |
| Quad Cast | — | Evokes one Orb four times | "If you have dark orbs, just take this" — quadruple-casting a 50-damage Dark Orb one-shots a boss |
| Multi-Cast | — | Evoke one Orb repeatedly | A fine finisher with Focus, spare Plasma or Dark — niche elsewhere |
| Capacitor | — | More Orb slots | Extra slots let Darkness cook behind your Frost without being pushed out |
Relics: Runic Capacitor (the material explicitly recommends it "if you have a lot of Frost or Dark") and Gold-Plated Cables.
How to pilot it: the opposite discipline: don't spam Orbs — every Channel pushes your cooking Dark Orb forward. Buy enough slots to let it sit, or time your Orb plays carefully. Block up, wait, cash in.
Strengths and weaknesses: the most dependable boss and Elite answer in the kit; slow by design, and Dark Evokes hit the lowest-HP enemy first — clear minions first.
Build 4: Claw — Zero-Cost Spam
Play pattern: the returning fan favorite — a spammy deck of 0-cost attacks that cycle and buff each other, led by Claw, which permanently strengthens every Claw in your deck each time one is played. Mobalytics calls it devastating; the video is blunter: Claw alone is rated D-tier in StS2 — you'd need 16–17 plays for ~300 cumulative damage against late bosses — so treat this as the fun pick and point All for One at good zero-cost cards to win with the same shell.
Core cards:
| Card | Cost | Effect | Why it earns a slot |
|---|---|---|---|
| Claw | 0 | Attack; every Claw in your deck gets stronger | The bread and butter — a few early and it's time to full-send |
| Scrape | — | Cycles your cheap attacks (including itself) | The primary cycling engine of the deck |
| FTL | 0 | Damage plus a bit of draw | Free card that thins the gap to your Claws |
| Flash of Steel | 0 | Attack that cycles | A good shop pickup to keep the loop going |
| Beam Cell | — | Easy Vulnerable applicator | Cheap attack that amplifies everything else |
| Go for the Eyes | — | Easy Weak applicator | Fine — but the video guide wouldn't run more than one |
| Momentum Strike | — | Damage that can be reduced to 0 Energy | Great in longer fights and free in the spam turns |
| Skim | — | Draws cards | With everything this cheap, draw is your real bottleneck |
| Hologram | — | Returns a chosen card (Claw, later Scrape/All for One) from discard to hand; upgrade removes the Exhaust | Keeps the loop alive |
| All for One | — | Retrieves your 0-cost cards from the discard pile | "Incredible" — and better spent on Turbo/Hotfix/FTL than on Claw alone |
| Feral | — | "Echo Form but for 0 Energy cards", cheaper to set up | Mobalytics' high-synergy payoff for the archetype |
| Panache | — | Rewards spamming many cards per turn | The natural payoff for a dozen 0-cost plays |
| Secret Weapon | — | Pulls All for One or Scrape out of your deck | Smooths the combo turns |
| Machine Learning | — | Draw engine | Helpful, though redundant once All for One is online |
| Relics: Iron Club (great draw tool), Power Cell (gets you started), and the attack-spam family — Nunchaku, Shuriken, Kunai, Ornamental Fan, Kusarigama all "work wonders when spamming cards". |
How to pilot it: two warnings from the material: don't take every 0-cost card you see (deck bloat makes finding Claw harder), and since the deck ignores Orbs, stack some Frost as passive Block anyway.
Strengths and weaknesses: iconic, fast and fun, but with a far lower damage ceiling than the Orb plans — lean on the All for One + good-zero-cost-cards version.
Build 5: Secondary Scaling Routes (Powers, Energy Toolbox, Status)
Three more viable scaling routes, ranked just behind Orb slots + Focus by the video guide:
Power spam. Echo Form is a single-card scaling win condition ("take an Echo Form and you can win with whatever is in your deck"), Creative AI spawns random Powers every turn, and Signal Boost copies your next Power and persists across turns — play it early, then double your Echo Form three turns later. Power-synergy relics (Lost Wisp, Game Piece, Jeweled Mask) pay off here.
Energy toolbox. The video guide's favorite: Turbo (+2 Energy, +3 upgraded), Super Critical (gain 4, Exhausts), Skim (draw), and Hologram to retrieve whichever you need. Turbo + Hologram + Skim is called "a deck on its own", so all three sit in S tier. Meteor Strike feeds you Plasma (Energy every turn), and the surplus funds X-costs like Tempest or Helix Drill, or pseudo-infinite turns playing your whole deck two or three times. Bigger decks make Hologram better, not worse.
Status package. Cards that create statuses are a real archetype now: Trash to Treasure Channels a random Orb whenever you create a status ("probably the best card for the archetype"), Smoke Stack deals 5 damage to all enemies per status created, Boost Away makes the statuses, and Rocket Punch becomes free when a status shows up. It's high variance — the reliable version builds around Turbo and Overclock rather than pure status spam.Compact (turns statuses in hand into Block) and Flak Cannon (Exhausts every status card in any zone) shine as answers to enemies that inflict Infection or Burns.
Which Build Should You Pick?
- Frost tank for safety — the build that makes Act 3 trivial.
- Big Zap for tempo; Dark when you keep losing boss fights.
- Echo Form / energy toolbox when the Orb pieces don't come — they're almost always findable.
- Claw for nostalgia, with the honest caveat that StS2 rates it well below the Orb plans.
